A pre-tied headscarf is made to be ready in seconds. A square headscarf is made for the days you want to style it yourself. Same prints you love, a little more freedom.
If you've been curious about squares but weren't sure where to start, this is for you. Here's what a square headscarf is, who it's right for, and three easy ways to wear one.
What is a square headscarf?
A square headscarf is just what it sounds like: a square of fabric that you fold and tie yourself. There's no built-in shape, so you decide how full, how high and how loose it sits.
Many of our prints come in three styles: square, pre-tied and open back pre-tied. So when you fall for a print, you can usually choose the version that fits your routine. You'll find every square in our square headscarves collection.
Square or pre-tied: which one is for you?
Both cover your hair beautifully. The difference is how much of the work you want to do.
- Choose a square if you like to play with your look, tie it differently from day to day, or want one piece that can do more than one job.
- Choose pre-tied if your mornings are tight. Our pre-tied tichels have a hidden velvet grip and an adjustable strap, so you slip it on, adjust the fit and go.
- Choose open back pre-tied for Shabbos, Yom Tov and simchas. It adds an extended back piece for a dressier look, perfect for holidays and special occasions.
Plenty of women keep both: a pre-tied for busy weekdays, and a square for the days they have a few extra minutes and want to make the look their own.

3 ways to wear a square headscarf
1. As a classic headscarf
This is the look most women start with, and the one you'll wear most.
- Fold the square in half, corner to corner, to make a triangle.
- Place the long edge across your forehead, with the point at the back.
- Bring the two ends around and tie them at the nape of your neck.
- Bring the ends forward over your shoulders, or let them hang down your back.
Tie it a little higher for a fuller look, or a little lower for a softer one. Give yourself a few tries. By the end of the week, your hands will know what to do.

2. Pirate style
Pirate style is the casual one. Fold your square into a triangle, place it on your head with the point at the back, and knot the ends at the back of your head, over the point. Leave the ends and the point hanging at the back.
It sits close and neat, and it's great for school runs, errands, cleaning for Shabbos, or a walk with the kids.

3. As a belt
On the days you're wearing a wig or a different head covering, your square doesn't have to stay in the drawer. Fold it into a long, narrow strip and tie it around your waist, or thread it through your belt loops.
It's an easy way to finish an outfit, especially a plain dress or a sweater and skirt. Wear your print as a belt one day and on your head the next.
How to choose your first square
Start with the colors you already wear most. Your headscarf should finish your outfit, not make you rethink it.
- Deep colors for fall and winter: Bohemian Nights is charcoal with pink, orange and blue flowers. Ocean Veil is charcoal with pink and white ferns and a mauve border.
- Soft and pretty: Rosewater has pink and mauve florals with a burgundy border.
- A little vintage: Retro Garden (Square) has flowers with a vintage feel, like a find from your favorite vintage shop.
Your square, your way
Beautiful shouldn't be complicated, even when you tie it yourself. Pick a print you love, try all three ways, and see which one feels most like you. Browse our square headscarves and find the one you'll reach for again and again.
